Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Exits After Shift Towards Chicken.
A head of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have hit maximum pizza demand while diversifying the company into chicken products has been ousted after conflicts with its board.
Executive Shake-Up
Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a new leader.
The outgoing executive, who served at Domino's for more than two decades, had sought to redirect Britain's biggest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, commenting recently there was not “massive growth” left in the British pizza industry. He noted chicken was the quickest rising food category in the world.
Governance Tensions
Sources suggest that there was tension between the CEO and the board over his approach and management style, although the company's official statement said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Product Introduction
In the autumn, the chain introduced its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which the former chief called a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is testing it in select stores in the North West region and the province.
While the business is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it regards fried chicken as complementary to its primary pizza operations.
Board Comment
The Domino's chair, the company chair, said: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and value creation in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing selecting the ideal CEO to oversee the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Industry Challenges
In the latest update, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said transactions fell by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the quick-service industry had “intensified” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the period before the budget and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a significant fall in six-month income.
Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain disclosed the shutting of multiple locations a recently, after the company behind its outlets entered insolvency.
Health Efforts
Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards healthier eating, the company has rolled out lower-calorie items, such as its light base line of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as meat-free and wheat-free pizzas. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has 2,171, while a personal has 909 calories.
Acting Leadership
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the gambling company a well-known operator. It is believed that she prefers not to take on the CEO position permanently.
She said: “We have a several ongoing expansion and operational projects that we will be concentrating on executing at speed.”
Frampton noted these included ongoing development on the organization's supply chain and new item creation, and its loyalty scheme.
The pizza chain is also without a full-time chief financial officer until the spring, when Andrea joins from the beverage producer C&C Group. In the meantime, Richard Snow serves as interim finance chief.
